The Amsterdam Roots Festival brings top international acts to the city's key cultural venues and open spaces. The festival's popularity has increased steadily since it first took place in 1998. Past performers have included Colombian vocalist Toto La Momposina, Moroccan fusion artist U-Cef, master of the sitar Ravi Shankar and African diva Miriam Makeba. Highlights of the programme this year include The Skatalites, Youssou N'Dour, Orishas and Celtic sounds from Shooglenifty. Don't forget to visit the World Village in Oosterpark, packed with free concerts and food stalls. Tickets and programme booklets available early May at the AUP Ticket shop and at Melkweg (+31 20 531 8181). Times vary for performances.
