The orchestra and its home, the imposing Concertgebouw, were founded in 1888. Under music director Willem Mengelberg (serving from 1895-1945), the orchestra attained an international reputation. When Riccardo Chailly took over the helm in 1988, he gave it a more 'swinging' repertoire. The accoustics are so amazing that over 1,000 CDs have been recorded here; a live concert makes for a memorable performance indeed. The Concertgebouw Orchestra gives some 130 concerts yearly. Reservations are essential.
