On May 5th, the Dutch remember those who died during World War II. The Queen and the Prime Minister lay a wreath at the National Monument on Dam Square, and two minutes of silence are held at 8pm. On May 5, the day the Germans surrendered, called Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day), the Dutch celebrate the war's end throughout the city. On Dam Square, a free concert ("Liberation Pop") is held, featuring famous Dutch artists who then travel from town to town and from stage to stage by helicopter.
